About
Rooted in cattle genetics.
Dr. Larry Benyshek and Dr. John Hough formed their company in 2003 to turn the
data cattle operations already collect — from seedstock breeders and commercial
producers to feedlots and packing plants — into information people could
actually use. GEM grew out of that work and continues to serve thousands of ranchers within the beef industry.
Larry Benyshek, Ph.D.
Co-founder
Larry started his career in 1973 as Director of Research and Education for the
North American Limousin Foundation, then joined the University of Georgia
faculty in 1976. There he built a team of scientists providing genetic
evaluations for many major beef breeds across the U.S., Canada, and South
America, and later headed UGA's Animal and Dairy Science Department. He is a
recipient of the Beef Improvement Federation Pioneer Award.
John Hough, Ph.D.
Co-founder
John started out managing show and sale cattle and ran Circle G Angus Farm
before earning his Ph.D. in animal breeding and genetics at the University of
Georgia. He taught beef cattle breeding at Auburn, then directed education and
research for the American Polled Hereford Association and, after the merger,
the American Hereford Association, where he led the first international
genetic evaluation of any beef breed.
